Can Grok Bot buy on Amazon? The block, Musk's 'make you whole' post, and how to shop safely

On Oct 15, 2026, users reported Amazon blocking Grok Bot as an 'unauthorized AI agent'. Musk replied that users should buy elsewhere, and posted that SpaceX will 'make you whole' for Bot purchase mistakes. Grok Bot's written terms still say you're responsible for agent charges. Here's what each source says and how to shop with approval gates. Not legal advice.

What you need

Steps

  1. What happened: on Oct 15, 2026, @niccruzpatane posted that Grok Bot hit Amazon's 'unauthorized AI agent' rules and could no longer order. Elon Musk quoted it: 'Just ask Grok @Bot to buy what you want someplace else and get a better deal.'
  2. What Amazon's rules say: Amazon's Conditions of Use include Agent Terms. They say an agent may not access Amazon unless it identifies itself and follows Amazon's requirements, and that it may not access Amazon if Amazon has asked it not to. So for now, assume Grok Bot can't shop on Amazon for you.
  3. What Musk posted: also on Oct 15, he wrote: 'If Grok @Bot makes a mistake with a purchase or leaks your card (never happened yet), SpaceX will make you whole.' That's a public post, not a published policy. We couldn't find a matching claims process in xAI's or Cursor's docs as of Oct 15.
  4. What the written terms say: the Grok Bot Terms (updated Oct 12, 2026) say the customer is solely responsible for charges and other consequences of Agentic Actions, including ones the customer didn't intend. They also say the customer must set appropriate permissions, approval requirements, and spending limits, and must monitor unattended activity. Read §2.2–2.4 yourself, and if money matters, ask a lawyer.
  5. Shop elsewhere, with a gate: let the Bot research and compare prices across other retailers, add items to a cart, and stop. Have it show you the store, item, total including shipping and tax, and delivery date, then check out yourself or approve the final step.
  6. Set the rule in Settings > General > Auto-review > Custom Rules: 'Ask first before any purchase, payment, subscription, or entering card details.' Ask-first rules win when rules conflict.
  7. Keep cards out of chat. Don't photograph or paste card numbers. If a site needs payment, take over the screen and enter it yourself, or use a virtual or low-limit card from your bank.

Find [item] at the best total price (including shipping and tax) from at least three retailers other than Amazon. Show me a table: store, price, shipping, total, delivery date, and return policy link. Add the best option to the cart and STOP. Do not check out or enter any payment details. I'll approve or check out myself.
