How Grok's weekly usage limit works (and how to stretch it)
Paid Grok plans give you one weekly usage pool shared across Chat, Imagine, Voice, Bot, and Cursor. Here's how it's measured, what drains it fastest, what happens when you run out, and how to make it last.
What you need
- A paid plan: The X Subscription (Plus, Premium, Super, Ultra), or a legacy SuperGrok or Cursor plan
- Your Usage view: grok.com/dashboard → Usage (X Subscription) or Settings → Usage in the Grok app
Steps
- Know the model: on The X Subscription, each paid seat gets one weekly pool for eligible first-party usage, shared across Grok (Chat, Imagine, Voice, Bot) and Cursor. It isn't split into per-product quotas.
- Know what costs more: xAI says different products cost different amounts depending on compute. A chat message uses little, while a high-quality video or a long coding or agent task uses far more.
- Check your Usage view. It shows the percentage used, a breakdown by product, and your next reset date. Look there before guessing what drained it.
- Stretch it with Grok Bot: schedule routines once or twice a day instead of every few minutes, scope each run ('unread since last run'), and use connectors instead of browser automation where one exists.
- Stretch it with Imagine: settle the idea in a few draft images before generating video, and avoid re-rolling the same video prompt repeatedly.
- Know your options when you hit the limit: wait for the weekly reset, buy top-ups (Additional Usage), or move to a higher tier. Spending caps and Auto Top-up are in your billing settings.
- Third-party models in Cursor (Claude, GPT) aren't part of the pool. On Premium and above they're billed at API list price from prepaid credit.
Prompt to copy
Look at my routines and Bots. For each one, list the schedule, what it reads each run, and roughly how heavy the work is. Then suggest changes that cut usage (fewer runs, narrower inputs, connectors over browsing) without losing what I actually read. Don't change anything yet.
Tips
- Did xAI quietly lower limits? In October 2026, some users reported their weekly quota draining about twice as fast. xAI has not confirmed a change, so treat it as unconfirmed and compare your own Usage breakdown week to week.
- Hitting the weekly limit isn't a hard stop for Grok's free-tier Chat and Voice, which have their own separate limits, per xAI's FAQ.
- Top-up credit doesn't reset weekly; per Cursor's docs it stays available until used or until it expires (currently 365 days after purchase).
- On self-serve team plans, each seat has its own weekly pool. Seats don't share.
FAQ
How does Grok's weekly usage limit work?
Paid plans include one weekly pool shared across Grok products (and Cursor on The X Subscription). Each product draws a different amount depending on compute, and the pool resets weekly on the schedule shown in your Usage view.
Why is my Grok weekly quota draining so fast?
Video generation and long agent or coding tasks use far more than chat. Check the per-product breakdown in Usage. Some users reported faster draining in October 2026, but xAI hasn't confirmed any change.
What happens when I hit the weekly limit?
Paid features pause until the reset unless you buy top-ups or upgrade. Free-tier Chat and Voice limits are separate and still available.
Does Grok Bot have its own usage limit?
No separate quota on The X Subscription. Grok Bot draws from the same weekly shared pool as Grok and Cursor.
